The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the president try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your coat you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to see the determined opposition regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We must have to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the finest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply acting as if the worst regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both humility and belief, a blend that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
