EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
