British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Alert Roster with 11 Nations
The UK Foreign Office has added eleven more nations to its public advisory roster concerning the dangers of methanol contamination from tainted spirits.
This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only a few weeks ago, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following a number of high-profile events including the deadly loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for ingestion.
While it is generated during the creation of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.
But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.
Authorities' Recommendations for Travellers
Foreign Office minister the minister stated that all travellers should recognize the signs of methanol toxicity.
"If you're having drinks overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer said.
"In case something seems unusual, such as a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – get medical help fast."
The complete roster of nations noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
